What Medicare pays for

Medicare covers up to 100 days of skilled nursing facility care after a 3-day inpatient hospital stay: $0 a day for days 1–20 after the deductible and $217 a day for days 21–100 in 2026 (Medicare.gov: Skilled nursing facility care). It doesn't pay for long-term care, including assisted living (Medicare.gov: Long-term care).

Read the stars properly

CMS ratings start from health inspections, then move up or down a star for staffing and quality. A home with an abuse citation can't score above two stars on inspections (CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System, Technical Users' Guide (Sept 2026)).

Is MedicalCare.org free to use?

Yes. Searching, comparing and asking for help are free for families. We're a for-profit website: care providers may pay to advertise with us, and paid placements are always labelled.

Where does your data come from?

Nursing home ratings, staffing and inspection data come from CMS, the federal agency that runs Medicare (CMS Provider Data Catalog: Nursing homes). California assisted living licenses come from the California Department of Social Services (CHHS Open Data: Community Care Licensing Facilities). See our data.

Does Medicare pay for assisted living or nursing homes?
