What to look for in a memory care home

  • Safety: secure doors and outdoor areas, and how the home prevents wandering.
  • Staff: how many staff are on each shift, including nights, and what dementia training they have.
  • Daily life: structured activities, meals and help with eating, bathing and medications.
  • Changing needs: what happens if care needs increase, and when a move to a nursing home would be needed.
  • Price: the full monthly cost and what's included. Medicare doesn't pay for long-term care (Medicare.gov: Long-term care).
